About St Bees Head Heritage Coast

St Bees Head Heritage Coast is located on the west coast of Cumbria, England, marking the most westerly point of the Cumbrian coastline and the only Heritage Coast in the county. The area features spectacular red sandstone cliffs rising up to 90 meters (295 feet) above sea level, providing some of the highest sea cliffs in England. These cliffs are an internationally important site for seabird colonies, including breeding populations of puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and fulmars. The unique geology and vegetation support rare wildflowers and coastal habitats, making it an essential conservation area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Historically, the coastal area has ties to mining, as well as maritime heritage with nearby ports and former railway infrastructure converted into trails. Hiking is a top outdoor activity, with the popular Coast to Coast long-distance route passing through. The well-maintained cliff top footpaths offer stunning views over the Irish Sea along with opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and nature study. The nearby St Bees village provides access to sandy beaches, local amenities, and accommodations. The area experiences a moderate maritime climate giving visitors a mild but often windy coastal environment. St Bees Head Heritage Coast remains a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts interested in scenic coastal walks, rich biodiversity, and coastal geology.
